4 Foods That Make You Age Faster

Can some of the foods you eat every day actually make you age faster? According to nutrition specialist Mike Geary, not only are there foods that can accelerate aging… some are even marketed as “healthy” by giant food corporations.

Every type of food you eat causes different biochemical reactions in your body. Because of this some foods can help to fight aging while other actually age you faster.

Avoiding or minimizing the bad foods and eating the right ones can make you look 5-10 years YOUNGER than your real age, says Geary. He even wrote a book on the subject – The Top 101 Foods That Fight Aging – which he co-authored with nutrition expert Catherine Ebeling.

In this article you discover four foods you probably eat every day that are causing you to age faster.

When we talk about aging, it’s not just about wrinkles on your skin or how thick your hair is, says Geary, it’s also about the things you can’t see… like how well your organs are functioning, and whether or not your joints are degrading. You’ll probably agree this is much more important than just how you look on the surface (although you want to improve BOTH!)

So, what are these four foods that are directly related to the rate at which you age?

First food that ages you faster: Wheat (this includes “whole wheat”)

wheat and its effect on aging

There are nasty little compounds called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs)  that speed up the aging process in your body. Over time this leads to wrinkled skin and causes harm to your organs and joints.

One of the biggest factors that increase production of AGEs inside your is high blood sugar levels. The higher your average blood sugar levels are over time, the more AGEs are formed inside your body, which makes you age FASTER.

Wheat contains a very unusual type of carbohydrate (not found in other foods) called Amylopectin-A. This has been found in certain tests to spike your blood sugar even higher than pure table sugar.

In fact, based on blood sugar response testing documented in studies, it raises your blood sugar more than almost any other carbohydrate source on earth.

This means that wheat-based foods such as breads, cereals, muffins, bagels and other baked goods often cause much higher blood sugar levels than most other sources of carbohydrates.

Baked wheat products also contain carcinogenic chemicals called acrylamides. These form in the browned portion of breads, cereals, muffins, etc. They have been linked to possible increased risk of cancer and accelerated aging. These acrylamides are also found in high levels in other browned carbohydrate sources like french fries and any other browned starchy foods.

Second food that ages you faster: Corn-based foods

corn

This is quite a variety of corn-based foods that you might be eating on a daily basis like corn chips, corn cereals, corn oil and high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).

Like wheat, corn-based starchy foods also have a big impact on blood sugar levels. This means they can increase AGEs in your body, making you age faster.

But there’s another problem with corn says Geary. Scientists have found out that the fructose in high-fructose corn syrup causes 10 times more formation of AGEs in your body than glucose! This means the HFCS you consume daily (in sweetened drinks, most processed foods and even salad dressings and ketchup) contribute to faster aging!

It gets even worse…

Corn-based foods and corn oils also contain excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. This causes an imbalance in your omega-3 to omega-6 ratio, which in turn leads to inflammation and oxidation in your body.

Geary’s advice: Avoid or reduce corn-based foods as much as possible. Even though they aren’t as bad as wheat in relation to blood sugar, and they don’t contain gluten like wheat does, they are still bad for you.

Third food that ages you faster: Sugar

sugar

Sugar is an obvious one to avoid. You’ve probably heard how bad it is for you a thousand times before for many different reasons. But why does it affect aging?

Again, it’s about the relationship between your average blood sugar levels and blood sugar spikes over time, and the increase of AGEs in your body.

My personal trick to satisfy my sweet tooth is to only have 1-2 squares of dark chocolate after dinner instead of a normal full dessert, say’s Geary. One or two squares of dark chocolate contain only 2 grams of sugaras opposed to 40-80 grams of sugar in a typical dessert.

Also, instead of sugar in your daily coffee, tea, in baking, or other sweetening needs, consider using a natural non-caloric sweetener like Stevia. This dramatically helps you control your blood sugar response and thereby help slow aging.

Keep in mind that some starchy foods like white rice, oatmeal, and white potatoes can also impact your blood sugar levels significantly and increase formation of AGEs in your body. If you eat them, it’s best to do so in smaller portions and to balance them with healthy fats and protein to slow the blood sugar response.

Fourth food that ages you faster: Vegetable oils

Vegetable oils have been marketed as “healthy” by giant food companies for many years, but you only need to understand a little biochemistry about how these highly-processed oils react inside your body to see how false this claim is.

vegetable oil

A lot of processed foods you probably eat regularly contain vegetable oil.

Anything labeled soybean oil, corn oil, vegetable oil, canola oil, or cottonseed oil has usually undergone a refining process under extremely high heat and with the use of chemical solvents such as hexane.

The reuslt is an oil where the polyunsaturated fats have undergone a lot of oxidation. This makes it very inflammatory inside your body. It leads to the production of free radicals. This damages your cell membranes, contributes to faster aging, heart disease, and numerous other health problems.

To avoid the health-damaging effects of vegetable oils, it’s best to avoid them as much as you can. Instead go for oils and fats that are truly healthy, such as extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and grass-fed butter.

There you have it… four foods you might want to ditch (or at least minimize) from your diet if you want to look and feel years younger and slow down the process of aging in your body.

If you want to learn more about the effects of the food you eat on aging, I really recommend Geary’s and Ebeling’s book. You can also find my review on it here.
