Losing weight when you’re over 50 doesn’t have to be as hard as you think. Read on and discover six simple rules to supercharge weight loss and start melting off unwanted fat.
Weight loss is a multi-billion dollar industry and there is a tendency to make things way more complicated than they need to be. One of the main reasons for this is because people are always looking for that magic formula that’s going to let them lose weight effortlessly.
But you don’t actually need a magic formula! You don’t need any fancy pantsy newfangled diet fitness fad.
Here are six simple and painless rules – that you can follow along with any eating program – and will help optimize your weight loss results.
1: Stack up on low energy density foods
Rule number one is to start eating more low energy density foods. Low energy density means a small amount of calories for a high volume of food.
Foods you should focus on eating as much of as possible are non starchy vegetables, broccoli, asparagus, leafy greens like spinach and kale as well as low sugar fruits like berries and citrus fruits. Broth-based soups with herbs and spices are also great and, if you’re looking for a low calorie snack, a really good one is air-popped popcorn.
Your absolute best strategy for weight loss is to focus as much as possible on eating these foods low energy density, high nutrient foods. You’ll nog only be reducing your calorie intake but also packing your meals with antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber!
2: Eat what you love
Rule number two is to eat what you love. There’s no point trying to stick to a diet, say paleo or keto, if you don’t like meat or low-carb or if your favorite foods are rice and pasta and bread.
If you’re not eating foods that you really enjoy and look forward to eating there’s no way you’re going to be able to stick to this diet. If you hate the foods a certain diet is making you eat it’s probably not going to work for you, no matter how good a diet it is!
3: Control your portions
Rule number three is that you need to practice portion control. It doesn’t matter how nutritious and healthy your food is, if you eat too much of anything you will find it hard to lose weight.
The problem is that there’s often a huge difference between what most people consider to be a normal serving and what is actually a healthy serving size.
When you’re starting out to lose weight it might be helpful get out your kitchen scales and measuring cups and measure out an actual standard serving of each food. After a while you’ll be able to eyeball what a normal serving size is for the foods you eat regularly.
4: Learn to love tea
Rule 4 is to drink lots of herbal tea because one, they have any calories and they are delicious without milk or sugar. Two, because they’re hot they take a long time to drink so they really fill you up. They are a lot more satisfying than just drinking water. And three, they come in so many different flavors.
When you drink herbal tea after a meal it’s going to make you feel a lot more satisfied eating less food.
5: Only splurge when you’re eating out
Rule number five is that, if you’re going to splurge, make sure you only do it when you’re eating out. If you splurge at home it’s far too easy to just eat the entire contents of your kitchen. However, if you go out to eat in a restaurant or at someone’s house there’s natural limits imposed on you because you can only eat what you’re served.
So, if you go out to a restaurant or go out to someone’s house just make it a free meal. Eat whatever you feel like eating. Eat your favorite foods and really enjoy yourself. As long as you only splurge one time per week you will lose weight. Consider this your reward for sticking to the other rules for the rest of the week.
Rule number six is to move your body. Now, food is by far the most important factor in the weight loss equation. You can lose weight without doing any exercise at all. But, for maximum success and to lose weight as quickly and painlessly as possible – not to mention maintaining a strong and healthy body – it’s a good idea to get more active.
This doesn’t mean that you have to go crazy and do some insane amount of working out every day. It just means do more activity than you’re currently doing.
So, those are six simple rules for losing weight. Quick recap: one eat lots of low energy density foods, two make sure you eat food that you love, three practice portion control, four drink lots of herbal teas, five don’t splurge at home and six move your body.
If you follow these six rules you are pretty well guaranteed to be successful at losing weight. So, give them a go and and watch that excess weight drops off and never comes back.
