Do you have tight hip flexors? If you spend a lot of time sitting, chances are you do. As a matter of fact nearly everybody does, no matter how active or sedentary they are.
When your hip flexors tighten it causes a lot of potential problems. We’re not just talking a little stiffness, soreness or joint pain here.
If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, you may well be suffering from tight hip flexors:
- Nagging joint pains in your legs, lower back or hips
- Hips locking up
- Walking with discomfort
- Bad posture
- Trouble sleeping
- Sluggishness in day to day life
- High Anxiety
- Compromised Immune System
- Circulatory issues
- Digestive problems
- Loss of sexual performance
- Lack of Explosiveness in the gym or sports

How to test for tight hip flexors
Start by lying on your back while straightening out your legs. This increases the stretch on your hip flexors, making it easier to detect tightness.
While in this position, check for these three things:
- Look for tightness in your quads, hips and back.
- Do you feel a pulling on your hip or on your lower back?
- Does it feel like you have an increase in the curve in my lower back? When you put your hand under your back does it feel like there’s lots of space?
The shorter your hip flexors are, the more you will feel a pulling sensation on your quads, hips and/or lower back.
Next, keep lying on your back, but now bend your legs. This decreases the stretch on your hip flexors.
Now go through the three checks again:
- How is that tightness in the quads hips and back? Is it decreased? Has it decreased a lot compared to the legs being straight?
- How is that pulling on your hip or lower back? Has it decreased, or even decreased a lot?
- Lastly, chech that curve in your lower back. Has it decreased? Can you still get your hand under it?
Do you have tight hip flexors?
If you are experiencing lots of tightness in the quads, hips and back when lying down with your legs straight, that’s a good sign that you have tightness in the hip flexors.
The same goes for if you have lots of pulling on your hip and your lower back or if you have a big curve in your lower back.
If you have any of those signs it’s important for you to address that hip flexor tightness, because it can have an effect on your health and performance. It can also increases the risk of injury and slow down your recovery from injury.
